Ghiberti, Lorenzo
► (1378-1455) Escultor, pintor y orfebre renacentista italiano. Autor de dos de las cuatro monumentales puertas de bronce del baptisterio de Florencia, la septentrional y la oriental. Como fundidor de bronce construyó el relicario de san Jacinto y el sarcófago de san Cenobio (catedral de Florencia). Fue asimismo notable escritor.

Escultor, orfebre y diseñador italiano que trabajó en Florencia. Se formó como orfebre y pintor. En 1402 ganó un concurso para realizar un par de puertas de bronce para el baptisterio de la catedral de Florencia, superando a Filippo Brunelleschi. Esta distinción le trajo fama y reconocimiento inmediato. Los trabajos en las puertas duraron desde 1403 hasta 1424. En 1425 se le pidió realizar otro par, conocidas como las Puertas del Paraíso, que terminó en 1452. Los relieves del primer par de puertas son la obra escultórica más importante del estilo gótico internacional en Italia; aquellos del segundo par, realizados en un estilo más moderno, se ubican entre los ejemplos más notables del arte renacentista (ver Renacimiento) italiano. Otros de sus trabajos por encargo comprenden tres estatuas de bronce para Or San Michele (1413–29) y dos relieves para el baptisterio de la catedral de Siena (1417–27). Dirigió un gran taller con muchos ayudantes, entre ellos, Donatello y Paolo Uccello. Su tratado sobre historia y teoría del arte contiene la primera autobiografía que se conserva de un artista.
